Einstein said that you cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it. Vertical growth is emerging as the next generation approach to development. By building human capacities, interventions informed by vertical growth have a lasting impact. Our capacities encompass who we are and how we are; a growth mindset is the first and essential capacity we need.

This is exciting for coaching, aligning with the principles of improving self-efficacy and client independence, while strengthening the case for working with leaders on identity, values and emotional intelligence. It leverages the skilled coach’s psychological mindedness, and challenges us as coaches to attend to our own personal development and vertical growth.

For organisations, vertical growth cultivates a more adaptable, stronger culture of leadership and continuous learning, delivering a greater return on the investment made in leadership coaching.

Drawing on research from writers including Carol Dweck; Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey; Robert J. Anderson and William A. Adams; Matthew Syed; and Tony Rousmaniere, we present the importance of vertical growth and mindset for coaching, with lessons from the field. We provide opportunities to reflect on your own vertical growth and mindset, and to discuss applications to your coaching practice.
